In Memory of Sgt. Keith Allen Kline On July 5th, 2007, Sgt. Keith Kline was killed in action by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army Airborne division based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His deployment started three months ago, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, as a communications systems support specialist.
Keith was on outstanding young man who I had the privilege of coaching. He had a heart of gold and would do anything for you. His senior campaign down at the state tournament is one that we as coaches are always going to remember and speak of. From his first round victory against a district champion from Columbus DeSales, to his thrilling overtime victory, down 10-2 against the previous year’s 4th place finisher in the state tournament. That performance at the state tournament earned him a sixth place finish, along with the year end Most Inspirational Award.
At his funeral, you could see that Keith was inspirational to more than just his fellow teammates and coaches. I saw numerous old teammates of his, that I have not seen in years. A whole community mourned and celebrated his life, as did many members of his military unit. The streets were lined with yellow ribbons and people holding American flags. A funeral procession that was the longest that I have ever seen. For a young man so small in size, he made a huge impact on the community as a whole. If you knew Keith you know that he was very proud to do what he did, which helps bring a sense of peace to the whole situation. Many individuals spoke at his service and all did him justice, I could almost see his face, giving us that little smile that only he could do. His family is one that is very close knit, and proud. I would like to send my condolences. They are a huge part of this Rocket wrestling family.
SGT Kline’s awards and decorations include four Army Achievement Medals, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Basic Parachutist Badge.
As you walk the streets and continue on with your normal daily activities, I hope that you as an American remember what Keith did and his fellow soldiers are doing , in order for you to feel safe and do as you please. He will always be remembered and never forgotten. May he rest in peace.
